Emergency and exit lighting are essential safety measures under Victoria's building regulations. Owners have to keep them working and be able to prove it in the annual essential safety measures report. We test every fitting, keep the logbook up to date, and fix what fails — usually on the same visit.

What the testing involves

AS/NZS 2293.2 requires emergency and exit lighting to be inspected and tested every six months. That means checking every fitting is present, clean and correctly labelled, then running a discharge test — cutting mains power so each fitting runs on its battery for its full rated duration — and recording the results.

Fittings that fail get a new battery, lamp or complete replacement, and every result goes into the logbook your building surveyor or auditor will ask to see.

Repairs, upgrades and new installs

Older fluorescent emergency fittings are expensive to keep alive. We replace them with long-life LED emergency and exit fittings, and install new emergency lighting as part of fit-outs and change-of-use work so the tenancy complies from day one.

Frequently asked questions

Still have questions?

Ask the team
How often does emergency lighting need to be tested?
AS/NZS 2293.2 calls for inspection and testing every six months, including a discharge test where each fitting runs on battery for its full rated duration. Results are recorded in a logbook.
Who is responsible for emergency lighting in a building?
In Victoria the building owner is responsible for maintaining essential safety measures, including emergency and exit lighting, and for the annual essential safety measures report. Leases often pass some of that responsibility to tenants — check yours, or ask us and we'll help you work it out.
Will the testing disrupt our business?
The discharge test means the lights run on battery for a period, so we plan testing around your trading hours — before open, after close or on a quiet day.
What happens to fittings that fail?
We replace the battery, lamp or the whole fitting — usually on the same visit — and record the repair in the logbook.
Can you upgrade our old fluorescent exit signs?
Yes. LED emergency and exit fittings use less power, last longer and are cheaper to maintain. We can replace them progressively as they fail or all at once.
Do you look after strata and multi-tenancy buildings?
Yes. We test common-area emergency lighting for owners corporations and property managers and provide the records for the annual essential safety measures report.
