The switchboard is where your property connects to the grid — the point of connection between the network and every appliance in the house. It's also the most common failure point in Australian homes, especially now that families are stacking EV chargers, ducted air conditioning, and induction cooking onto boards designed in an era when a kettle and a TV were the biggest loads. What actually goes wrong at your switchboard

Every property has a set of service fuses — the main fuses sitting at the point of connection between the distribution network and your board. They're the last line of protection before all your circuits. You don't touch them; only your licensed electrician or the network distributor is allowed to. Under normal loads a service fuse quietly does its job for decades. What's changed is the load. A modern home running a Tesla wall connector on 32 amps, a heat-pump hot water system, an induction cooktop and a ducted reverse-cycle air conditioner is drawing three to four times what the same house was designed for in 1990. If the service fuses were already close to their rated capacity, the extra load pushes them right to the edge. The fuse element gets hot. It cycles hot-cold, hot-cold, every time the loads switch on and off. Over months, the metal fatigues. Eventually it arcs, and the fuse blows — sometimes with enough energy to damage the surrounding switchboard cabinet.

When that happens the whole property goes dark. The network distributor has to come out to isolate the supply before anyone can safely open the switchboard. Meanwhile the board itself often needs to be replaced, not just re-fused — because the original board was never designed for the loads that killed the fuse in the first place.

This is a real emergency and a coordination job. The network distributor (United Energy, AusNet Services or Powercor depending on where you are) needs to come on-site to disconnect the supply at the pole or pit before any work can begin at the switchboard. That's their scope. Everything downstream of the service fuse — the board itself, the meter tails, all your circuits — is our scope.

Preventative switchboard upgrades — before it becomes an emergency

The far cheaper, less disruptive path is to catch this coming. If your board is 25+ years old, still uses ceramic fuses, has no safety switches, or was designed before EV chargers and heat pumps existed, it's a candidate for a planned upgrade. We do a load assessment — measuring what you're actually drawing, projecting where you're heading (EV in the driveway next year, pool heat pump the year after) — and quote a switchboard that matches the future demand, not the 1990 demand.

A planned upgrade takes one day, keeps the distributor out of it, gives you RCD protection on every circuit, adds spare capacity for the next round of appliances, and ends with a Certificate of Electrical Safety registered with Energy Safe Victoria. Compared to an emergency call-out with a burnt-out board, a distributor on the clock and a family without power for two days, it's a fraction of the cost and none of the drama.

Signs your switchboard is on the edge

Nuisance tripping when you run multiple appliances at once. A warm or discoloured meter box or switchboard cabinet — heat is a red flag. Buzzing, humming or crackling coming from the board. Ceramic ('porcelain') fuses instead of modern circuit breakers. No safety switches (RCDs). Lights dimming when the air conditioner or oven kicks in — that's voltage sag from a supply that can't keep up. If you notice any of these, book a switchboard inspection before you lose power at 6pm on a 40-degree day.

My service fuse has blown and I have no power — what do I do?
Call Glenn on 0418 576 387 straight away. We coordinate directly with the network distributor (United Energy, AusNet Services or Powercor depending on your area) to get your supply isolated safely, then replace the board and service fuses same-day or next working day. Don't attempt to open the switchboard cabinet yourself — the service fuses are on the network side of the meter and are live even when your main switch is off.
Why did my service fuse blow — I haven't changed anything?
In most cases the load has crept up over years while the fuse rating stayed the same. A new EV charger, an induction cooktop, a heat pump, or all three, can quietly double your peak load. Older service fuses running near capacity will fatigue and eventually blow, often on the hottest day of the year when everything's running at once. We do a load assessment as part of the replacement so it doesn't happen again.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing an EV charger?
Usually, yes. A 7 kW EV charger draws 32 amps continuously — most 90s and older boards weren't sized for that on top of existing loads. We assess the board at the EV charger quote stage. Sometimes minor upgrades add the capacity you need; often a full board replacement is cheaper long-term than a piecemeal fix.
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Melbourne?
Most residential switchboard upgrades run $1,800 to $3,500 fitted. Variables are circuit count, whether service fuses need coordinating with the network distributor, asbestos in old panels (occasional in pre-1980s boards), and whether the main supply cable needs upsizing. What's the difference between a service fuse and my main switch?
The main switch (RCD or circuit breaker at the top of your switchboard) is on your side of the meter — you can operate it, and it protects your circuits. Service fuses sit before the meter, on the distributor's side of the point of connection. They're only accessible by a licensed electrician or the network distributor and are the ultimate protection between your property and the grid. Service fuse failure means the distributor has to attend before any work can begin.
Will my insurance be affected by an old switchboard?
Increasingly yes. Several major Australian insurers now ask about switchboard age and RCD protection on new policies and renewals. Some will decline claims from electrical faults if the board was demonstrably below current standards. An upgrade reduces risk, keeps premiums stable, and prevents disputes after a fault.
Do you handle the coordination with United Energy / AusNet / Powercor?
